Mr. Pefley was born Dec. 23, 1917, at Boise, a son of Idaho pioneers Wynn W. and Mary O. Beard Pefley. He graduated from Boise High School, and attended Boise Junior College until entering the military service. He was a member of the Amphibious Engineers, with the rank of T/5, which operated behind the Marine assault on several of the islands in the South Pacific that were held by the Japanese. Following victory by the U.S. Forces, he was able to locate his wife's uncle and his wife who were held prisoners by the Japanese in the Philippines. He brought them food and sweets that they had not enjoyed for years. He was with the party of observers that entered the bombed city of Hiroshima four days after the bombing.
He was very proud of being second generation of Idaho pioneers, and he was the grandson of Boise Mayor Peter Jackson who served two terms, his first term in 1884.
Mr. Pefley was a most caring man, and one who loved to sing. He was a member of the youth choir at St. Michael's Episcopal Cathedral, and was active in vocal groups at BJC. He continued his education after the war by taking correspondence courses from International Correspondence School.
Following the end of World War II, he was one of the employees who worked for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Hunt Project and the Davis Dam; was in Peru, South America, working on hydrollic [sic] projects for International Engineers, part of Morrison-Knudsen interests, and worked for the Department of Highways. He retired from the Department of Highways due to ill health in 1974.
He married Ruth M. Dehlin on Feb. 3, 1942, at Boise.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Mr. Pefley loved the outdoors, beginning as a youth and continuing throughout his life, right up to becoming ill. Being ill sidelined him participating with the Mountain Search and Rescue teams, and Associated Land Emergency Rescue Team (ALERT). He was one of the group that incorporated these two groups of empathy-minded individuals.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Boise, three daughters, Kathy (Mrs. Dale) Cooper of Meridian, Maureen (Mrs. Dennis) Merrell of Pocatello and Virginia (Mrs. Morrie) Broker of Los Angeles; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Wallace of Castro Valley, Calif., a sister, Etha (Mrs. Frank) Bradford of Yucca Valley, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call today from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Mountain View Funeral Home in Boise.
