Claude Pefley, 60, Dies Near Rockville

Claude G. Pefley was found dead in the barn on his farm on R.F.D. 4 at 5 p.m. Friday afternoon by his brother, Earl. Dr. Basil Merrill, Parke county coroner, returned a verdict of death as a result of self-inflicted gunshot wounds from a 12-gauge shotgun. No reason was given for the suicide. Mr. Pefley, who was 60 years old, was born in Parke county April 13, 1890, the daughter (sic—son) of D. [Daniel] V. and Lydia [Coombes] Pefley. He had been a farmer most of his life. Dr. Merrill said that the man died between 1 and 2 p.m. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Gladys Pefley; the mother; two sons, Ernest, Indianapolis, and Elmer, Fort Wayne; a daughter, Mrs. Milbrey Huxford, Montezuma; two brothers, Ray and Earl, both of Rockville; five sisters, Mrs. Dora Overpeck, Rockville; Mrs. Cleo Miller, Terre Haute; Mrs. Opal VanDivier, Montezuma; Miss Doris Pefley, Terre Haute, and Mrs. Thelma Brafield (sic—Bradfield), Rockville; and eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but friends may pay their respects at the Barnes mortuary in Rockville.
