558--JOHN ROBINSON PEFFLEY (son of No. 551 ) married at Ladoga:

1--Oct. 6th, 1859, SAREPTA STONER, born, Mar, 21st, 1838, died, June 2nd, 1866, (daughter of JACOB and LYDIA A. STONER). Jacob was born Oct. 23rd, 1818, died Aug. 3rd, 1885. Lydia was born Sept. 26th, 1822, died June 2nd, 1902.
2--Oct. 1870, EUNICE AMANDA HUNT, born Apr. 1st, 1842, died Dec. 30th, 1906, (daughter of IRA HUNT). All buried in Stoner Cemetery, east of Ladoga, Indiana. John R. obtained his education in the old log school house with its split benches and greased paper tacked over holes in the logs for windows. He was a brick-layer. He invented and patented a metal fence post.

Issue: All born in Mont. Co., Ind.

HARDENING OF ARTERIES

John R. Peffley, of Ladoga, Passes Away at an Indianapolis sanitorium

John R. Peffley, of Ladoga, died Thursday morning at the Eastman sanitorium in Indianapolis of hardening of the arteries, aged sixty years. He was taken to Indianapolis ten days ago where one foot and two toes on the other foot were amputated, but he grew worse until he died. He resided with Mrs. Arthur Ronk at Ladoga. Miss Dora Peffley was another daughter. The funeral will take place at Ladoga Friday afternoon. Interment at the Stoner cemetery.

JOHN R. PEFFLEY
Born April 9, 1830, and departed this life July 1, 1909, aged 79 years, 2 months and 21 days, leaving one son, William H. Peffley, of Indianapolis, and two daughters, Lorena Dell Ronk and Dora Marcella Peffley of Ladoga. Also five brothers, Joel, of Delphi; Circle, near Ladoga; Thomas of Ladoga; Zachariah of Eldorado, Kan., David H,. near Ladoga and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Rose, of Ladoga and Mrs. Lavina Mahorney near Ladoga.
He leaves seven grandchildren, Walter L., Karl S., and Jessie G. Peffley, Mary E., Helen M., Dorothy K. and Florence Ronk. Many relatives and friends mourn their loss but knowing it to be his great gain

the fruition of his fond hope.
The deceased was the second one of three children who moved from Virginia in the fall of 1831, and landed near where the town of Ladoga now stands. October 6, 1859, he and Sarepta Stoner were reunited in marriage. To this union were born Sarah E., Perry A. and William H. The two former died in infancy. This companion departed for the higher life, January 26, 1860, at a little past 28 years of age. November 10, 1870 he was married to Eunice A. Hunt. To this union were born Lorena Dell (now wife of Arthur Ronk) and Dora Marcella. This wife and mother departed this life December 30, 1906, at the age of 64 years.
Deceased united with the Christian church September 15, 1862 and remained a consistent and active member to the last. He was confined to his bed many weeks with a disease of peculiar character. His suffering was intense, and he prayed for a deliverance of his suffering that he may have rest in his heavenly home where he now enjoys.
The bereaved family feel truly grateful to those many friends who tendered their kindly offices to them in this their sore distress.

John R. PEFFLEY, farming, Ladoga, son of John & Mary M. (ROBINSON) Peffley, was b. in W Va April 9, 1830. In 1833 he came with his parents to this County and settled in the wild woods of Clark Twp. His early educ. was such as was afforded in the log cabin schoolhouse with its split log benches, its greased paper tacked over a hole in the logs through which the light might pass, and its peculiar pedagogue, who would be a real curiosity in this day of the free school system. His first vote was cast for free schools. His practical educ. was complete especially as far as it related to the clearing of timber and hard labor. Oct 6, 1859, he marr. Miss Sarepta, daughter of Jacob STONER. She d. June 1866. In Oct. 1870, he was marr. to his second wife, Miss Eunice A. daughter of Ira HUNT, an early settler of this township. She was b. May 1, 1842. Mr. P. is the father of 3 children: Wm. H, by his first wife and Lorena D. and Dora M. by his last wife. He is now living on his farm, one mi. NE of Ladoga. April 3, 1877, Mr. P. obtained a patent for a fence post, which is an excellent thing of its kind and which should be generally known and used throughout the country. Mrs. Peffley's mother, an intelligent and interesting old lady, is still living, just E. of Ladoga, and is well posted in the scenes and characteristics of the early settler's life.
