John R. PEFFLEY, farming, Ladoga, son of John & Mary M. (ROBINSON) Peffley, was b. in W Va April 9, 1830. In 1833 he came with his parents to this County and settled in thewild woods of Clark Twp. His early educ. was such as was afforded in thelog cabin schoolhouse with its split log benches, its greased paper tacked over a hole in the logs through which the light might pass, and its peculiar pedagogue, who would be a real curiosity in this day of the free school system. His first vote was cast for free schools. His practical educ. was complete especially as far as it related to the clearing of timber and hard labor. Oct 6, 1859, he marr. Miss Sarepta, daughter of Jacob STONER. She d. June 1866. In oct. 1870, he was marr. to his second wife, Miss Eunice A. daughter of Ira HUNT, an early settler of this township. She was b. May 1, 1842. Mr. P. is the father of 3 children: Wm. H, by his first wife and Lorena D. and Dora M. by his last wife. He is now living on his farm, one mi. NE of Ladoga. April 3, 1877, Mr. P. obtained a patent for a fence post, which is an excellent thing of its kind and which should be generally known and used throughout the country. Mrs. Peffley's mother, an intelligent and interesting old lady, is still living, just E. of Ladoga, and is well posted in the scenes and characteristics of the early settler's life.

John R. Peffley, of Ladoga, Passes Away at an Indianapolis sanitorium
John R. Peffley, of Ladoga, died Thursday morning at the Eastman sanitorium in Indianapolis of hardening of the arteries, aged sixty years. He was taken to Indianapolis ten days ago where one foot and two toes on the other foot were amputated, but he grew worse until he died. He resided with Mrs. Arthur Ronk at Ladoga. Miss Dora Peffley was another daughter. The funeral will take place at Ladoga Friday afternoon. Interment at the Stoner Cemetery.
