DELPHI -- Clara J. Peffley McDermitt, 59, of 9391 W. County Road 550 N., died at 1:20 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Lafayette.
She had been a patient there for one week and in failing health the past eight months. Born April 18, 1947, in Lafayette, she was the daughter of Charles and Esther Shaw Peffley. She was a 1965 graduate of Jefferson High School in Lafayette. Her first marriage was to Jake Smith on Sept. 2, 1966, in Lafayette. He died June 13, 1997. Her second marriage was to Philip W. McDermitt in Delphi on Aug. 27, 2003, and he survives. Mrs. McDermitt worked at Brosman's Grocery Store in Delphi for the past nine years, and she was a homemaker. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, playing bingo and mushroom hunting. Surviving with her husband are a son, Roger D. Smith (fiance: Peggy Scowden), and two daughters, April L. Shaw and Kim Ash (husband: Jimmy), all of Delphi; a stepdaughter, Lori Brier (husband: Mark) of Pine Village; a stepson, Philip M. McDermitt of Indiana; and sisters, Katherine Bickett (husband: Glen) and Ruthann Lerch (husband: Lonnie), both of Lafayette, and Rosemary McGuire (husband: Irving) of Mikado, Mich. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the funeral at 2 p.m. Sunday at Abbott Funeral Home, Delphi, the Rev. Todd Ladd officiating. Interment Pleasant Run Cemetery, rural Carroll County. Surviving are 5 grandchildren, 4 stepgrandchildren, and special friends, Connie Neal and Brian Shaw. Memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll County Cancer Association, envelopes available at the funeral home.
