Louise Peffley 81, after a year-long struggle with lung cancer, died peacefully surrounded by family and friends while in hospice care in the home of Marilyn and Frank Nicola on Friday, March 19, 2004. Loving mother to Kevin and Mark, adoring grandmother to Cara and Becca, loving sister of Florence Slabaugh, Mary Flair and Bob Fagan, "Aunt Louise" to numerous nieces and nephews, and dearest friend to many, including her dog, Casey. Louise was born Carrie Louise Fagan on November 6, 1922, in Mishawaka, IN. She graduated from Mishawaka H.S. in 1940, attended San Jose State Jr. College, served on the Mishawaka Draft Board at age 22, married C. Ronald Peffley at age 27, and had two sons, Kevin and Mark, by age 30. She moved with her family to Indianapolis in 1955, where she became employed at Naval Avionics until retiring in 1983, and then became a maker of hand crafted dolls, a garage sale enthusiast and a relentless fan of Bobby Knight. Her legacy is her example of love, of kindness and thoughtfulness, of caring, unwavering optimism, her contagious, uncontrolled laughter at the funny, outrageous things in life, and her gracious appreciation for those who helped in times of need. An informal gathering of friends and family will be held Thursday evening, March 25, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at her Indianapolis home. Additional services will be held on Saturday in Mishawaka, IN. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
